‘Black Lightning’ Cast Talks Importance of Representation


While The CW has quite a few superhero shows in its programming lineup, Black Lightning stands apart from the rest and not just because it’s not a part of the Arrowverse the other series are part of. The series focuses on a black hero, in a predominately black community, and doesn’t shy away from the issues that come along with that.

And its that willingness to explore the issues as well as celebrate the black community on the whole is an integral part of Black Lightning, according to the cast and crew. During the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, much of the discussion about the series centered on the issue of representation and why it matters so much, not just on Black Lightning, but in entertainment on the whole.

The CW superhero saga Black Lightning has plenty of the usual zap-bam-pow action one would expect from the genre and producer Greg Berlanti. But this tale of a conflicted African-American superhero who reluctantly returns to crime-fighting also had a deeper meaning to co-developer Salim Akil, who remembers a time when there were no role models for him in the comics and he was forced to improvise.

South African football player, Luyande Ntshangase, has died in hospital after being struck by lightning during a friendly match in South Africa, his club has announced.

Ntshangase’s club, Maritzburg United, confirmed the striker’s untimely passing in a club statement on Facebook, saying they had lost a player with ‘enormous potential’.

“We are extremely sad about the loss of Luyanda, an exciting young player with enormous potential,” club chairman Farook Kadodia said.

Luyanda Ntshangase has died in hospital after being struck by lightning during a football match back in March. The 21-year-old, who played for Maritzburg United FC, was left in an induced coma since he was hit by lightning during a friendly match on March 1.

Maritzburg United FC confirmed the player’s death in a statement on Facebook.

Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia said in the statement: “We are extremely sad about the loss of Luyanda, an exciting young player with enormous potential. On behalf of Maritzburg United Football club, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Ntshangase family.”
