The swim instructors of Splash Week aren’t going to tell kids that drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children in the United States. Rather, they’re going to show them how to “talk to the fishies” by sticking their faces in the water and blowing bubbles.

“We do our best to promote the fun side of learning how to swim,” said YMCA Westside District Aquatics Director Meghan Angel.

So there will be a lot of Marco Polo and singing songs in this week of free swimming lessons. Kids might not even notice themselves getting stronger and more skilled in the water and learning life-saving skills.
