Detroit — Nearly 300 women gathered along the Detroit River on Saturday to pay homage to the sartorial style of the Kentucky Derby and raise money for local nonprofits.

Women, dressed in Derby chic dresses, gloves and over-the-top hats, attended the sold out Detroit Derby Brunch at the Roostertail restaurant.

Event organizer Shalika Sanders said the brunch is exactly what she imagined when she started it in 2014 just for close friends as a fun idea to celebrate Mother’s Day on Kentucky Derby Day. The event quickly grew from 50 to 140 women in the first year.
