Weis Markets, employee settle race discrimination suit out of court


WILLIAMSPORT – An out-of-court settlement has been reached in a federal civil rights suit in which Weis Markets Inc. was accused of unlawful race discrimination in employee hiring and promotions.

No terms were included in the settlement notice filed Friday in U.S. Middle District Court in the suit filed in April by Jason Allen, an African-American employee at the food market chain’s Milton warehouse.  

The Sunbury resident had sought to represent all African-Americans who were not hired, promoted or subjected to a racially hostile work environment.

Weis denied the discrimination claim and opposed Allen’s request to make his complaint a class action because it claimed he did not allege any other African-Americans were subjected to a hostile work environment.
