Vallejo City Council challenged for lack of diversity




Vallejo leaders were sent a letter on Monday which threatens legal action if the city doesn’t change the City Council elections from at-large to a district-style system, the Times-Herald has learned.

Malibu-based attorney Kevin Shenkman argues in the five-page letter that Vallejo’s current system does not reflect the diversity of the city because there are no Latino and/or African Americans on the City Council.

“Vallejo’s at-large system dilutes the ability of Latinos and African Americans to elect candidates of their choice or otherwise influence the outcome of Vallejo’s council elections,” Shenkman wrote.

The council currently consists of four Filipino and three Caucasian members.
