US Vets to honor Long Beach’s Jack McDowell – Press Enterprise

Jack McDowell is a living legend — just don’t let him catch you saying that.

McDowell retired from the U.S. Marines in 1971 as a First Sergeant after serving for 26 years and seeing action in three different wars. He has been awarded three Purple Heart medals, 16 other medals and citations, and was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal in 2012.

He also was part of the first wave of African Americans to integrate the Marines.

On Friday, Sept. 14, U.S. Vets will honor McDowell for his lifetime of service and the inspiration he has been for generations of Marines at a luncheon. The 11th annual Honoring Those Who Served event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency.
