Growing up in the greater Johnstown area, I do not recall many opportunities to meaningfully connect with people who did not look like me.

Specifically as a white person, I rarely – if ever – interacted with someone who was African American until I went to college.

There were several factors that created this lack of experience with diversity. First, it was not uncommon growing up to hear racial slurs or to uncomfortably laugh at racist jokes.
