Tour to feature turn-of-the-20th-century homes on Barnwell Avenue, Fairfield Street | News

Close to downtown Aiken and within the sound of the melodic church bells from nearby, lies a community of quaint, historic homes.

Occupying part of the original grid of parkway streets are architectural gems that date back to the turn of the 20th century. These homes appear on the Sanborn Maps as early as 1889 where they are denoted as “colored residences.”

To call attention to the importance of the neighborhood, four of the homes will be open for tours from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday .

This tour will be the first of its kind in the north side of Aiken and will offer a look inside a few of the very special homes that have been renovated and updated, according to a news release about the tour.
