Royal Caribbean Knew Zipline Excursion in Roatan, Honduras, Was Dangerous


On her 59th birthday, September 3, 2015, Alyda Chimene departed the Port of Miami on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas and headed ashore for a ziplining excursion in Roatan, Honduras.

Chimene, who is from Austin, Texas, thought the tour would be safe because — as she would later state in a lawsuit — Royal Caribbean “guarantee[s] that the excursions are planned by ‘insured partners who adhere to the highest safety standards in the industry.'”

  • Royal Caribbean’s 228,081-ton Symphony of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship.
  • It debuted in March, and will spend the summer in Europe before coming to the US in November.
  • The ship’s most expensive suite can cost over R800,000, depending on the cruise.

For Royal Caribbean, bigger is better. 

In March, the cruise line debuted the world’s largest cruise ship, the 228,081-ton Symphony of the Seas, which follows the previous record holder, Royal Caribbean’s 226,963-ton Harmony of the Seas. But according to CEO Michael Bayley, a ship’s size is a function of the company’s desire to pack enough dining, entertainment, and lodging options to make all of its passengers happy — not a goal in itself.

Man dies after colliding with wife on zipline on honeymoon in Honduras


An Israeli man died after colliding with his wife while the two were ziplining in Honduras on their honeymoon, according to local authorities.

Egael Tishman, 24, set off on his turn on the zipline tour organised by the cruise ship on which he and wife Shif Fanken, 27, had just got married. He did not realise Ms Fanken was stuck on the line about halfway down, forcing a collision at high speeds.

Newlywed husband is killed after zipline collision in Caribbean


A newlywed man has been killed and his bride was left in a serious condition in hospital after they collided on a zipline while on their honeymoon.

Egael Tishman, a 24-year-old Israeli, and his wife Shif Fanken, 27, got into the accident around 1.30pm on Thursday in Honduras, local media reports. 

The pair had boarded Royal Caribbean cruise ship Allure of the Seas in the US after their wedding on Saturday before arriving on the island of Roatán five days later. 

Shif Fanken, 27, is taken to hospital after she collided with her 24-year-old husband Egael Tishman while on a zipline in Honduras

Egael (pictured) and Shif both survived the initial impact. He later died in hospital in Honduras, while she was flown to America for surgery and is now in a stable condition
