Tropical Storm Isaac expected to weaken as it moves through Caribbean on Thursday

(SUN-SENTINEL) — Tropical Storm Isaac’s wind speeds have slowed to 45 mph as of Thursday morning, and the National Hurricane Center predicts that the storm will gradually weaken as it heads through the Eastern Caribbean in the coming hours.

Storms that head through the Caribbean at this time of year have the potential to be steered north toward the United States.

But for Isaac, conditions in the Caribbean Sea don’t seem to be there to promote longevity. Wind shear, which refers to fluctuations in wind strength in the atmosphere, something that tears storms apart, is present in Isaac’s path.

Isaac is forecast to move into the eastern Caribbean Sea on Thursday, and then move across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea through Saturday, the hurricane center said.

As of Thursday at 8 a.m.,…

Hurricane Isaac on path for Caribbean but could weaken

Hurricane Isaac continued to track westward and toward the Caribbean on Monday morning on a path that could bring it across the Lesser Antilles by Thursday.

And if that wasn’t enough the National Hurricane Center is also watching a disturbance already in the Caribbean that could become a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

But first Isaac. As of 10 a.m. CDT Monday, Hurricane Isaac was located about 1,150 miles east of the Winward Islands and was moving west at 14 mph.

Isaac had winds of 75 mph, making it a minimal Category 1 hurricane.

While Isaac hasn’t gained any strength this morning that could change later today. But it won’t last long: the hurricane center said weakening should begin by the middle of the week as Isaac nears the Lesser Antilles.

Hurricane Beryl may weaken, but Puerto Rico and the Caribbean are on alert

Beryl remained very small, churning along at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, shy of Category 1 status, according to an advisory issued at 11 a.m. ET by the National Hurricane Center.

Though the storm’s intensity could still fluctuate unpredictably, its chances of regaining hurricane strength before reaching the Lesser Antilles, the arc of islands from the US Virgin Islands to Grenada, have dropped significantly, CNN meteorologists said.

Beryl is due to reach that zone sometime late Sunday or early Monday, the hurricane center said, then later Monday head south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, whipping the island with minimal tropical storm-force winds as it continues to weaken.

Still, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello has declared a state of emergency for the island that…
