African Studies Center Awarded $2.2 Million Title VI Grants

The African Studies Center, an affiliated regional center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, has been awarded National Resource Center (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) grants from the United States Department of Education. The African Studies Center will receive more than $2.2 million over four years to support Africa-focused education, including African language instruction.

NRC and FLAS grants, part of the Title VI program of the U.S. Office of International and Foreign Language Education, promote greater understanding of countries and regions across the globe through foreign language and area studies instruction and research.

VI named best place to visit in the Caribbean

As the Virgin Islands works to recover from Hurricane Irma, U.S. News & World Report has ranked it the best place to visit in the Caribbean.

The publisher on Tuesday released new rankings that include region-specific lists as well as naming the “Best Vacation Destinations.”

In the Caribbean, the VI was followed by St. Lucia, the United States VI, the Turks and Caicos Islands and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

On the global list, the VI ranked 21, with Paris taking the top spot, followed by Yellowstone National Park in the United States, and Rome at number three.

VI Daily News wins award for Category 10 | Business

The Virgin Islands Daily News is is the recipient of a silver Angel Award for Excellence in Public Service Advertising in the category of Fundraising Events and Initiatives for its “Category 10” keepsake magazine.

The publication, which was printed in December, focuses on the devastation brought on by hurricanes Irma and Maria in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The American Advertising Federation award was one of only 33 to be given in the national organization’s 4th District, which encompasses the Caribbean and the state of Florida.
