African American leaders unveil initiative to help community members vote

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – African American leaders in the Madison area held a press conference today for an initiative called “Roll to the Polls.”


The group of leaders unveiled details for an effort to get out the vote in advance of the Nov. 6 general election.

The event included participation from organizations such as the Urban League of Greater Madison, the African American Council of Churches and the NAACP.

Columbia City Leaders Unveil New Marker on African-American Heritage Trail

City leaders unveiled new markers on Columbia’s African-American Heritage Trail at a ceremony Tuesday. The markers commemorate African-American history in the city at Douglass Pool, the Original Russell Chapel and the Annie Fisher House. Vicki Russell played a part in researching for the project.


“This unveiling is our fifth marker since we started at Sharp End,” Russell said. “We have 12 to 14 more markers in the works. In combination with those markers and ones that already exist that were put in place by other entities, we will have over 20 markers eventually.”

National Museum of African American History and Culture unveil Oprah exhibit

WASHINGTON – When Oprah Winfrey closed her Harpo Studios in Chicago’s West Loop, she put some its furnishings into storage.

Now a set from Winfrey’s talk show, which put her on the path to becoming a global figure and one of the most successful entertainment executives in the world, is among the artifacts in an exhibit opening on Friday at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, “Watching Oprah, The Oprah Winfrey Show and American Culture.”

The 4,300-square-foot Oprah exhibition runs through June, 2019 and has three sections: “America Shapes Oprah, 1950s-1980s;” The Oprah Winfrey Show,” spawned in Chicago and “Oprah Shapes America.”

Stone Zoo To Unveil the Caribbean Coast Thursday

Zoo New England announced Monday that the Caribbean Coast, an immersive new experience at Stone Zoo, will open to the public on Thursday, June 7 following a ribbon-cutting ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The $4 million Caribbean Coast features a walk-through aviary with Caribbean flamingos, scarlet ibis, macaws and Jamaican iguanas, an exhibit featuring bush dogs, and fun, imaginative and interactive experiences designed to further connect guests of all ages to this region of the world. The Caribbean Coast is the only exhibit of its kind in New England where guests will have the opportunity to feed the flamingos.

The Caribbean Coast is being made possible entirely by private funding, including a generous contribution by StonehamBank.
