EDITOR’S NOTE: Caprock Chronicles is edited by Paul Carlson, emeritus professor of history at Texas Tech University. This week’s essay is by Lubbock historian Sally Still Abbe reviews the life of the late Dr. Joseph A. Chatman, one of Lubbock’s most outstanding citizens.

 

Joseph Alvin Chatman, second African-American physician in Lubbock, dedicated his life to the improvement of medical facilities for underserved citizens of Lubbock and the South Plains and of race relations. Dr. Chatman came to Lubbock in 1939, arriving with $7 in his pocket.
