Tropical wave forecast to bring heavy rain to Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

MIAMI, USA — A tropical wave is expected to bring locally heavy rainfall to portions of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico over the next few days.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, strong upper-level winds and interaction with the islands of the Greater Antilles, while the system moves generally westward, should inhibit tropical cyclone formation.

The chance of a tropical cyclone forming during the next five days has been reduced to low (30 percent).

Tropical wave threatens Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Bahamas

MIAMI, USA — A vigorous tropical wave located about 200 miles east of the Leeward Islands is producing a large area of disturbed weather over much of the western tropical Atlantic Ocean.

The disturbance is forecast to move westward to west-northwestward for the next few days, passing near or north of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the southeastern Bahamas. Interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of this system.

Tropical wave heading toward Caribbean, 50% chance of development


The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) is monitoring a ‘vigorous’ tropical wave which has a 50 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next day or so. 

In an update posted Monday morning, the NHC said that the system was about 200 miles east of the Leeward Islands and was heading west to west north-west, passing near or north of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the southern Bahamas.

Tropical Storm Patty Could Form By End of This Week


BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday November 12, 2018 – Forecasters are monitoring a “vigorous tropical wave” near the Leeward Islands that has a 50-50 chance of developing into a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Patty later this week.

The system, which has surfaced just over two weeks before the end of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season – which runs June 1 to November 30 – is located about 200 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is producing a large area of disturbed weather over much of the western tropical Atlantic Ocean.
