African Swine Fever Hits Northwest Region of Ningxia

China announced a new outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in the northwestern region of Ningxia on Sunday, reported China’s agriculture ministry.

The outbreak occurred on a farm with 57 live pigs in Yongning county, infecting pigs and killing 13, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said.

This marks the 25th region or province to record an ASF outbreak in China.

Currently there is no vaccine for ASF, although many countries are working to develop one, including China.

According to Liz Wagstrom, chief veterinarian at the National Pork Producers Council, the quest for an ASF vaccine has been going on for a good 50 years. It’s no easy feat, because ASF is the largest virus known to man, she said. Because of its size, it’s difficult to discover which, if any, of those…

China Searches for African Swine Fever Vaccine

The quest for an ASF vaccine has been going on for 50 years. It’s no easy feat, because ASF is the largest virus known to man, says Liz Wagstrom, chief veterinarian at the National Pork Producers Council. To put it in perspective, a…

China has culled more than 900,000 pigs due to African swine fever | News

By Dominique Patton and Hallie Gu

BEIJING (Reuters) – China has culled 916,000 pigs after around 100 outbreaks of African swine fever in the country, the agriculture ministry said on Tuesday, as the disease continues to spread to new regions and larger farms.

The disease has reached 24 provinces and regions since the first outbreak in August, roiling trade in the world’s top pork market and related sectors. China slaughtered almost 700 million pigs in 2017.

African swine fever does not harm humans but is deadly to pigs and there is no vaccine or cure.

The rare update by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on the size of the culling follows growing attention to the issue from other markets.

Taiwan’s President Tsai…
