A federal commission headed by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos released a long-awaited school safety report today that recommends, among other things, that the Department of Education abandon Obama-era policies aimed at protecting children of color from excessive discipline in school. The 177-page report says that disciplinary decisions should be left to classroom teachers and local administrators who should not have to follow guidance issued by the federal government.

Under President Obama, in 2014 the administration put districts on notice that they could be in violation of federal civil rights law if students of color were suspended, expelled or otherwise disciplined at higher rates than white students….

Russia’s 2016 Disinformation Campaign Targeted African Americans, A New Report Finds

New reports prepared for the Senate Intelligence Committee have found that Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election were far more extensive and targeted than previously thought. Researchers tasked with analyzing how Russia used social media to aide Donald Trump’s campaign have said Russia’s disinformation campaign targeted African Americans more than any other group in a reported attempt to suppress their votes.

“The most prolific [Internet Research Agency] efforts on Facebook and Instagram specifically targeted black American communities and appear to have been focused on developing black audiences and recruiting black Americans as assets,” The New York Times quoted a report from the Texas-based cybersecurity firm New Knowledge as having said about the Russian company…

Russian election influence campaign targeted African-Americans: report

Russia targeted African-Americans through social media, seeking to depress turnout from the reliably Democratic demographic as Moscow sought to influence the outcome of the 2016 election, according to a report produced for the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The New York Times reports that Russia used Instagram posts as part of its voter suppression drive, an effort that rivaled or even exceeded Russia’s efforts to influence people through Facebook.

The campaign was mostly run through the Internet Research Agency, a St. Petersburg company owned by a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the report from New Knowledge, a cybersecurity company based in Austin, Texas.

“The most prolific I.R.A. efforts on Facebook and Instagram specifically targeted black American…

The Russian effort to influence U.S. voters on social media ahead of the 2016 presidential election, targeted African-Americans, used various methods to try to suppress Democratic voter turnout and utilized Instagram similar to its campaign on Facebook, a new Senate report suggests.

The findings, which Texas-based cybersecurity company New Knowledge and researchers at Columbia University and Canfield Research LLC included in a report produced for the Senate Intelligence Committee, detail how Russia worked and continues to try to shape Americans’ opinions and sow division, The New York Times reported.

It is one of two reports senators commissioned as part of a bipartisan effort to examine Russia’s influence in the 2016 election, the newspaper noted.

They primarily focus on data…
