Facebook removed post by ex-manager who said site ‘failed’ black people | Technology

Facebook removed a post from a former employee who accused the company of “failing its black employees and its black users”, saying the memo about racial discrimination violated its “community standards”.

Mark S Luckie, who recently stepped down as strategic partner manager, published the piece on Facebook last week detailing his experiences as a black employee at a tech corporation that largely excludes African Americans, saying the company has also unfairly censored black people on the platform.

Facebook appeared to prove Luckie’s point this week by removing the letter before eventually reinstating it.

“My first reaction was shock that it happened,” Luckie told the Guardian after he saw that Facebook had flagged his post, saying it “goes against” the site’s standards….

EU releasing EC$24 million to Dominica for post hurricane reconstruction

ROSEAU, Dominica — The European Union is releasing to Dominica EC$24 million (€7.7 million), the first tranche of a total of EC$34 million (€11 million), as part of its contribution to the reconstruction of the country following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria last year.

With this grant the EU will support the construction of two emergency shelters in the Castle Bruce and Jimmit areas and the rehabilitation of 1,000 houses in various affected communities. The reconstruction will be carried out exclusively according to the Building Back Better approach and to the highest resilience standards.

In addition, the grant will also support the government in its revision of sector policies to include climate change adaptation practices and to reduce disaster risks…

Hood Seminary hosts blood drive seeking African-American donors – Salisbury Post

Hood Theological Seminary will host a blood drive from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

A Bloodmobile of the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will be in the parking lot next to the security office on the seminary campus, 1810 Lutheran Synod Drive.

While donors of all ethnicities are needed, “there is a critical need for blood donations from the African-American and black communities,” said Dean of Students Dora Mbuwayesango, organized the blood drive. “Unfortunately, African-Americans are disproportionately impacted by certain diseases which are treated through blood transfusions, such as sickle cell anemia.”

Tia Burch, the donor recruiter, notes the importance of donating to the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.
