Ghana is supposed to be a model of democracy and rule of law in Africa, but the assassination of an investigative reporter who helped uncover massive corruption in African soccer has given the country a black eye from which it will take years to recover.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was shot three times, two weeks ago near his home in the capital, Accra, by unknown attackers still at large. Recognized as having the freest press in Africa, Ghana now has the dubious honour of being home to the first journalist killed in 2019. Suale’s targeted killing is…

Coups and murder: the sinister world of apartheid’s secret mercenaries | World news

Keith Maxwell, the self-declared “commodore” of the South African Institute for Maritime Research (SAIMR), liked to dress up on special occasions in the garish costume of a 18th-century admiral, with a three-cornered hat, brass buttons and a cutlass. Ordinary members of his organisation were expected to show up in crisp naval whites.

Gathered together in upmarket restaurants, or the quiet of the Wemmer Pan naval base in south-central Johannesburg, they had the air of eccentric history buffs. Maxwell talked about the group’s roots in a Napoleonic-era treasure-hunting syndicate, and told outsiders it was still focused on deep-sea exploration.

But appearances were deceptive. Beneath the bizarre trappings lurked a powerful mercenary outfit that members claim was entwined with the apartheid…

Four suspects named in an application made at the opening of an inquest into the murder of Rwandan dissident Patrick Karegeya in South Africa, could further strain relations between the two countries.

The four — Appollo Ismael Kiririsi, Samuel Niyoyita, Nshizirungu Vianney and Alex Sugira — are Rwandan nationals.

The application on Wednesday was made by a lawyer representing the Karegeya family, Gerrie Nel, and was recorded as evidence by the magistrate at the Sandburg Court in Johannesburg.

Mr Nel told the magistrate that there had been no indication that “any” steps had been made to trace the suspects, and that there was “no contact with Interpol or any other international law enforcement agency.”

“This incident happened in 2013. We are now in 2019…

Top South African rapper charged with premeditated murder of wife

A popular South African rapper, Thulani Ngcobo, otherwise known as Pitch Black Afro, was on Thursday charged with “premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice” after the death of his wife on New Year’s Eve.

The deceased, Catherine Modusane, died at a BnB in Johannesburg following an argument with the rapper on December 31, according to South African media.

Modusane was found dead in a room in the early hours of that day and preliminary investigations showed that she had died of natural causes while an inquest docket was opened.

The pathologist leading the case, however, later found that she had died from unnatural causes, compelling a murder investigation to be opened, reported SowetanLIVE.

“There was an inquest opened but we changed that to…

Murder of Russian journalists in Africa linked to secretive mercenary group they were investigating, reports claim

Russian investigators concluded the trio were “attacked by unknown people who intended to rob them and were killed when they tried to resist,” according to the foreign ministry.

But the journalists’ money and film equipment were left on the road, a Khodorkovsky representative told The Telegraph last year.

Mobile phone records and other documents have now shown that their driver was linked to Prigozhin, and they were being followed by Emmanuel Kotofio, an officer of the CAR’s police special forces.

“The journalists were under the control of people from Yevgeny Prigozhin’s structures starting from the preparation stage,” the Dossier centre said.

Before and after their killing, Kotofio repeatedly called their driver and a Russian instructor under the command of Valery Zakharov,…
