Africa’s Ideological De Facto Leader

Economic factors draw people together than politics which divides them.

Economic factors draw people together than politics which divides them.

By Samuel Baligidde

When I hear of the simplicity of argument that President Yoweri Museveni does not have the credentials for enthronement as Africa’s most committed Pan-Africanist and de facto leader, I would be at no loss to decide that the artificers are totally negligent of their national duty.

As Edmund Burke once said ‘there is no qualification for government but virtue and wisdom, actual or presumptive’. The trouble with pursuing that line is that apart from the most dogmatic of his admirers, people now seem to be revising their perceptions. The retraction could be more of a mistake than the…

Bermuda opposition party leader ousted

Back in, Craig Cannonier (L); out, Jeanne Atherden

By Caribbean News Now contributor

HAMILTON, Bermuda — Bermuda’s opposition party, the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), has seen yet another of their leaders ousted.

This time, Jeanne Atherden was reportedly removed for being too passive.

Ironically, she was replaced by former party leader and one time premier Craig Cannonier, who is no stranger to controversy, as he himself was forced to step down as premier in May 2014 after serving for less than 18 months.

He was caught in a major political scandal dubbed ‘Jetgate’, which included the revelation of covert campaign funding by an American billionaire.

The OBA presently has 11 seats in the 36-seat parliament.

Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Umuhoza Ingabire was unexpectedly freed from jail on Saturday after President Paul Kagame granted pardon to her alongside two thousand other prisoners.

Ms Ingabire said the early release and the recent election of opposition members to Parliament were signs that Rwanda’s political space was opening up.

President Kagame approved a presidential order of mercy during a Cabinet meeting on Friday that set free 2,140 prisoners including popular musician Kizito Mihigo.

“I thank the President who gave me this liberation. I would like to ask him, if it is possible, to release other political prisoners who are here,” Ms Ingabire said as she left Mageragere Prison in Kigali.

The leader of the unregistered opposition FDU-Inkingi was…

South African leader makes the case for land reform

JOHANNESBURG —

Relax.

That’s the message South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has for anyone fretting about the nation’s plans for land reform, which drew a critical tweet from President Donald Trump last month.

The government won’t allow “land grabs,” and land redistribution designed to address racial inequities will be orderly, Ramaphosa said Tuesday in remarks to Parliament.

He also said he doesn’t expect South Africa to be targeted by sanctions as it legally pursues land reform. Some South Africans have speculated that the United States might impose sanctions similar to those against neighboring Zimbabwe, where violent land seizures occurred years ago.

“Just relax,” Ramaphosa said. “This process will end up very well.”

Some groups in South Africa,…
