South African Home Affairs Minister resigns amid sex scandal


South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, says his resignation is for national interest.

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, said he had accepted Malusi Gigaba’s letter of resignation.

His office announced Gigaba’s departure on Tuesday.

The former Minister of Home Affairs was the target of supposed extortion attempts by an opposition politician after a sex video emerged following what he described as theft by hacking.

47-year-old Gigaba was Minister of Finance from March 2017 to February 2018. He had defied calls to resign following allegations of lying under oath and a leaked sex video

Barbados’ state-owned broadcaster sending home 116 workers

The state-owned Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has announced its intention to send home just over half of its 230-strong workforce while also agreeing to a proposal by the employees’ bargaining agent for voluntary separation.

Special advisor and former General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Sir Roy Trotman broke the news Monday evening to reporters following more than two hours of talks with management of the CBC at the Pine, St Michael studios.

Sir Roy said the BWU delegation that included president of the CBC division Kent Jersen, tried unsuccessfully to get the corporation to give an enhanced separation package to those volunteering to leave.

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 4 (Reuters) – South African Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has said he will “fight … to the bitter end” against any moves to remove him after the anti-graft watchdog said he should be disciplined for lying under oath, the City Press newspaper reported.

On Wednesday, Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane directed President Cyril Ramaphosa to discipline Gigaba over remarks made under oath about the wealthy Oppenheimer family’s attempt to open a private airport immigration facility.
