Fuel prices have been a regular discussion among South African road users throughout 2018 as motorists reel from record-high fuel prices.

“2018 has been one of the most tumultuous years in history for South African fuel users, and the economy is still fragile and easily spooked,” Automobile Association said.

South Africans were hoping for some relief after the AA predicted a petrol price drop in 2018 but sadly this wasn’t to be. As bad as things are for fuel-users locally, spare a thought for some countries that pay much higher prices for their fuel.

Southern Africa’s most expensive fuel can be found in Zambia, where a litre of petrol costs $1.72/l which is equivalent to R24.88.

Kenya now among African countries with highest fuel prices

Kenya has been ranked seventh among African countries with the highest fuel prices, according to Global Petrol Prices.

There is a significant difference in the prices of fuel across Africa, with some countries charging as low as Sh30 while others demanding as high as Sh150 in exchange for a litre of petrol.

Central Africa Republic and Zambia hold the unenviable distinction of having the highest fuel prices at Sh154 and Sh150 per litre respectively.

Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Cape Verde and Burundi occupy the third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions.

Residents of Harare, for example, pay approximately  Sh147 for a litre of fuel.

The company beat its adjusted EPS guidance by 39 cents. This was driven by better than expected revenue from the global brands, better performance from joint ventures and lower than expected expenses, driven by timing.

The company also reaffirmed its full year EPS guidance of $8.70 to $8.90 per share. This includes a negative 35-cent impact from currency and fuel since April’s guidance and 6 cents related to the purchase price for Silversea Cruises, offset by better Q2 results and an improved revenue outlook.
