Everything You Need To Know About The First Smithsonian African American Film Festival: DCist


More than 80 movies by and about African Americans will be screened in D.C. next week as part of the inaugural Smithsonian’s African American Film Festival.

The four-day festival, which runs from Oct. 24 – 27, includes films ranging from Hollywood hits to experimental shorts. The event is organized by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The festival’s goal is to introduce the breadth and depth of African American film to a wider audience, according to Kinshasha Holman Conwill, the museum’s deputy director.

The Imagine Science Film festival kicks off today, and returns with more than a dozen films exploring science. The week-long event, which is also celebrating its 10-year anniversary, offers guests an opportunity to see projects on the matter from filmmakers all over the world, said the event’s creative program manager.

“The Imagine Science Film Festival is a global film company that produces science films that we curate from global filmmakers on different subjects and we highlight their films,” said Shemeeka Greaves.

Fiesta Fela ’18 African Culture Festival Saturday, October 13


For the eighth year,  Fiesta Fela will rock the Railyard on Saturday, from 10 am – 6 pm.  The annual event brings all day music, food and fun to Santa Fe.  This year’s headliner, Tommy Dukes and his blues band, will be supported by local musicians the Swank Brothers and others.  The event is family – friendly, with a childrens’ tent with hourly hands-on art and crafts workshops for kids of all ages.  And, of course, food and more food supplied by Jambo and many more food trucks.  And it’s free to the public, although a small donation is requested.

Three-day Year of Global Africa Festival | MSUToday


Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts & Sciences will honor authentic African culture during its three-day festival as part of MSU’s Year of Global Africa.

The festival will host activities from art and photography to African cuisine and films. The events aim to highlight the outpouring of content – including both art and science – from across the continent, as well as raise awareness of the African presence at MSU.
