Sisi: Egypt eyes effective African role in UN reform


ADDIS ABABA – 9 February 2019: Egypt is looking forward to a quantum leap in the strategic partnership between the African Union (AU) and the UN during Egypt’s presidency of the AU, especially in promoting peace, security and development, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said on Saturday.

The president gave his remarks during his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Addis Ababa, ahead of the 32nd AU Summit, slated for February 10-11.

During the meeting, Sisi reviewed Egypt’s envisioned priorities and objectives planned to be integrated into the AU’s framework during Egypt’s chairmanship of the AU, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.

South African arms firm eyes Indian deals on Ramaphosa visit


JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – The chairwoman of South Africa’s state arms firm Denel is accompanying President Cyril Ramaphosa on a state visit to India on Friday, hoping to sign deals or agree new joint ventures which would help it emerge from severe financial difficulties.

Denel has been plagued by years of mismanagement and exposure to a far-reaching influence-peddling scandal that led some lenders to cut off financing. It recorded a $125 million loss in the latest financial year.

Xiaomi eyes next growth phase, said to launch African department


  • Xiaomi has reportedly launched a dedicated African department to drive expansion on the continent.
  • The Chinese brand’s phones are currently available to purchase on the continent via distributors.
  • A direct approach could potentially result in more device variety as well as lower prices.

Xiaomi already has a presence in African countries, albeit via third-party distributors for the most part. Nevertheless, it seems like the company is expanding its efforts by launching a dedicated African department.

A craft brewer in South Africa is taking advantage to market cannabis beer after a recent court decision to allow private use of cannabis in the country.

Poison City Brewing, launched in 2015 produces five different beers, including its latest brand, Durban Poison Cannabis lager.
