Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi eyes African Cup of Nations debut

The 21-year-old has yet to taste continental action with the Super Eagles having only made his debut two years after their last appearance

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has spoken of his desire to see Nigeria return to African Cup of Nations finals with its next edition billed for Cameroon, next year.

The Super Eagles have missed out on the two previous tournaments, with their last appearance coming in their successful 2013 campaign in South Africa.

Also, Ndidi – a World Cup campaigner who made his Super Eagles bow in 2015 – has never been to the continental spectacle. However, with Gernot Rohr’s side sat at the summit of Group E of the qualifying round, they stand a chance of making the 32-team party to Cameroon.

SABC eyes massive layoffs – The East African

More by this Author

South Africa’s cash-strapped public broadcaster SABC is considering laying off nearly 1,000 people, or about one third of its full-time staff, in a bid to turn around its “dire” finances, according to a document seen on Tuesday.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation sent a memo to workers informing them of its intention to cut jobs at all levels and in all departments in a bid to save around $30 million a year.

The company’s financial distress deepened during the tenure of its former chief operating…

Africa nervously eyes Trump’s trade war

After a phony war stretching to the earliest days of his presidency, Donald Trump fired off the loudest salvo yet in his trade battle with China in July.

Threatening to impose 10% tariffs on over $500bn of Chinese imports – from baseball gloves to badger hair, frogs’ legs to toilet paper – Trump reiterated his intention to dramatically narrow the United States’ trade deficit with its greatest economic rival. While Trump was cheered on by his base and protectionist forces in Washington DC, the verdict of the international economic community was scathing.

In a bracing statement, the IMF warned that a trade war could shave 0.5% off global growth by 2020, amounting to some $430bn in lost economic activity. EU leaders lined up to criticise their ally’s swing towards…
