African entrepreneurs eye digital platforms to expand footprint – Xinhua


NAIROBI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) — The new generation of African entrepreneurs are keen to harness opportunities provided by mushrooming digital platforms to expand their operations across the continent and beyond, executives said on Tuesday during the inaugural Africa e-commerce week underway in Nairobi.

Speaking at a high-level dialogue on trade and the digital economy in Africa, the founders of leading start-ups in the continent said that online trading will unlock the potential of indigenous enterprises.

Anna Ekeledo, executive director of Afrilabs, a Nigeria-based Pan African network of technology and innovation hubs, said that targeted use of digital platforms will enable local enterprises to explore new markets and expand their revenue streams.

African local leaders eye ‘sustainable development’ to cope with urban boom


A leader of an umbrella group of local governments from across Africa insisted on Friday that “sustainable development” is needed to cope with the challenges of rapid urbanisation on the continent.

Thousands of delegates are meeting for the Africities Summit that brings together local leaders, civil society, governments and international donors every three years.

This year’s gathering in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh is focusing on the “transition to sustainable cities and territories” and the role of local governments in Africa.

“Sustainable development is the only alternative for African cities,” said Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, the secretary general of umbrella group United Cities and Local Governments of Africa.
