South African Government Establishes Crypto Assets Regulatory Working Group


A crypto assets regulatory working group dedicated to crypto and blockchain has been established by the South African (SA) government. English-language local news outlet BusinessLive reported on the development on Jan. 2.

Tito Mboweni — the South African finance minister — declared:

“It is anticipated that, following broad industry comment and participation, the crypto assets regulatory working group will be ready to release a final research paper on the subject during the course of 2019.”

The finance minister further noted that the SA Revenue Service is working to include cryptocurrencies in the tax forms for the next year. The taxation laws amendment bill of 2018 included amendments that, Mboweni explained, would ensure that losses may only be offset against profits from crypto.

India scores over China; establishes leadership role in African education sector


India has launched a pan-Africa e-digital knowledge and heath network, establishing its leadership role in an area where China has not ventured yet despite its quest to extend its influence across the continent.

The five-year project, unveiled by external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, aims at providing free tele-education courses in various academic disciplines to 4,000 students annually from African countries. In addition, it will help provide free continuing medical education to 1,000 candidates comprising African doctors, nurses and paramedical staff. Indian doctors will provide free medical consultancy to African doctors who seek such consultancy, officials told ET.

Puerto Rico establishes nonprofit to attract new businesses and investment to the island


SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The board of directors of Invest Puerto Rico, Inc. (InvestPR) has announced that the entity is officially operational. InvestPR, a nonprofit investment organization created by Act 13-2017, will promote Puerto Rico as a competitive investment jurisdiction to attract new business in order to drive economic development and create new, well-paying jobs on the island.

The entity will also provide services to help businesses establish themselves on the island and connect them with local companies to acquire goods and services, in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development & Commerce (DDEC) and other government agencies.

The Bahamas Establishes a Blockchain Credentials System in Latin America/Caribbean First



Bahamian job seekers will now be able to share and verify their educational certificates from anywhere, thus reducing bureaucracy and enhancing convenience.

This is after the Commonwealth of the Bahamas became the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean region to implement a blockchain-based nation-wide credentialing system known as Bahamas Blockcerts, according to The Nassau Guardian. Through these nationally-accredited digital certificates, the government of the Caribbean country aims to enhance how national educational qualifications including certificates, academic degrees and diplomas are created, issued, viewed and verified.
