Flutterwave and Visa launch African consumer payment service GetBarter – TechCrunch


Fintech startup Flutterwave has partnered with Visa to launch a consumer payment product for Africa called GetBarter.

The app based offering is aimed at facilitating personal and small merchant payments within countries and across Africa’s national borders. Existing Visa card holders can send and receive funds at home or internationally on GetBarter.

The product also lets non card-holders (those with accounts or mobile wallets on other platforms) create a virtual Visa card to link to the app.  A Visa spokesperson confirmed the product partnership.

PZ Cussons warns on consumer demand, African challenges


(Reuters) – Soap and cosmetics maker PZ Cussons Plc <PZC.L> warned on Thursday it was facing weakened consumer demand across its main markets, with its dominant African business hampered by a weakened Nigerian economy and falls in the naira currency.

The owner of the Imperial Leather brand said it had also faced significant disruption in getting goods into Nigeria and as a result that the first-half contribution to its profit than a year ago from the country, its single biggest market, would be lower.

South African Consumer Spending Contributes To Healthy Rise In Retail Sales Growth


Total South African retail sales for May 2018 grew by three percent year-on-year excluding the effects of inflation, compared to the 3.1 percent year-on-year growth recorded in May 2017. This is according to the Mastercard SpendingPulse May 2018 report, which provides a macro-economic analysis of retail spending trends in South Africa.

The report shows that inflation in South Africa continued to moderate in May 2018, marking the 17th consecutive month that inflation contributed a declining proportion to overall retail sales growth. Total retail sales growth, including the effects of inflation, grew 5.6 percent year-on-year, meaning that higher prices contributed only 2.6 percentage points to total growth.
