News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Jan. 18, 2019: The City of Miramar in Broward County, Florida, United States is home to about 122,041 people, many of whom are Caribbean immigrants.

The city’s Mayor is Jamaican American and at least two of its current city commissioners were born in Jamaica. This March 12th, a St. Mary-born Jamaican immigrant and Jamaica Diaspora Education Task Force member, hopes he will be the third.

Miramar’s former Parks and Recreation Board member, Leo Gilling, is in the run for Seat 4 on the Miramar City Commission.

Gilling is a small business owner, media personality, educational advocate and writer. He has decades of dedicated community service and over 20 years of business experience in accounting, cost analysis, insurance and hospitality.

T&T police deny prison commissioner is dead | Caribbean


PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) yesterday described as “false news” reports being circulated on social media that Commissioner of Prisons Gerard Wilson had been killed.

“The TTPS wishes to assure that the Commissioner of Prisons is at this time alive and unharmed. The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service has also stated that there is no truth whatsoever to this rumour,” the police said in a statement.

The TTPS also cautioned the public against using social media to “spread false news and misinformation that may lead to needless panic and anxiety”.

Earlier this week, Wilson met with seven inmates who rushed to the aid of 11 prison officers who came under attack at the Golden Grove Prison, east of Port of Spain.

Lamont taps DCF’s first African-American commissioner


Two days from inauguration, Gov.-elect Ned Lamont on Monday tapped a regional administrator at the state Department of Children and Families (DCF) to lead the agency.

Lamont, who will be sworn into office Wednesday at Hartford’s State Armory, on Monday afternoon nominated Vannessa Dorantes to oversee the agency that provides programs for children, families and communities throughout Connecticut.

She begins work Wednesday as commissioner-designate as her nomination must be approved by the state’s General Assembly.

Dorantes, a Bristol resident, will become DCF’s first African-American commissioner.

She will earn the same salary as outgoing DCF Commissioner Joette Katz, a spokesman for Lamont’s transition team said Monday. Katz’s annual salary is $172,291, according to the state…
