Storm causes heavy flooding in Caribbean


A tropical storm has caused power outages and heavy flooding across the eastern Caribbean and forced flight cancellations, officials say.

Authorities in Barbados say they helped rescue several people from a flooded home, while school was cancelled in the nearby islands of St Lucia, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The US National Hurricane Centre said on Friday that up to 25 centimetres of rain could fall in some parts of Martinique and Dominica as a result of Tropical Storm Kirk.

Meteorologists warned of flash floods and mudslides.

Forecasters also warned of heavy rains for St Croix and eastern Puerto Rico.

Kirk had maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometres per hour and was located about 575km south-southeast of Puerto Rico.
