Stop and search powers authorised for police after Leicester Caribbean Carnival ‘disorder’

Leicestershire Police have been authorised to use stop and search powers in the city centre overnight following today’s Caribbean Carnival.

The powers, under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, were approved following a report of “some disorder” during festivities on the Victoria Park carnival ground on Saturday.

They cover the area within Leicester city centre’s inner ring road, from 6.25pm until 6.25am Sunday morning.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: “They are in place to enable officers to search for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments, to prevent incidents of serious violence.”
