South African men are more disadvantaged than women

Men in South Africa are more disadvantaged than women, according to a new study.

The study looked at health indicators, basic education and life satisfaction to arrive at the “Basic Index of Gender Inequality”, a numeric value from which they drew conclusions regarding gender inequality.

Researchers from the University of Missouri and the University of Essex carried out the study covering 134 countries.

South Africa diverges radically from most other African countries in that men significantly fall behind women in terms of education.

Also, men in South Africa are, according to the study, in far worse health than the country’s women.

Income – the measure most often used to determine inequality – was not included in the study.
