South African ex-minister claims Guptas threatened to kill him


South Africa’s former deputy finance minister has claimed that the Gupta business family at the heart of a corruption scandal threatened to kill him if he went public about an alleged attempt to bribe him.

During emotional testimony on Friday to a judicial inquiry that is examining claims of systemic looting under former president Jacob Zuma, Mcebisi Jonas said a member of the Gupta family issued the threat during a 2015 meeting to offer him the post of finance minister.

Speaking under oath, Mr Jonas said that one of the three Indian-born brothers, identified as Ajay Gupta, warned him that “if I ever suggested that this meeting happened, they will kill me”.
