The location where President Donald Trump will speak Saturday holds a key place in African-American history, says local activist Sonny Scroggins.

He told this week about how some consider the Kansas Expocentre property to be “hallowed ground” for African Americans, much as New York City’s Ellis Island gained that status for Europeans by serving as the entry point into this nation for many.

Thousands of blacks began migrating from the South to Kansas in the late 1870s, in part because federal troops were being withdrawn and their safety couldn’t be guaranteed as an oppressive white regime gained power.
