Sales tax plan could net $22 million for schools – News – Gainesville Sun


Plans to refurbish Alachua County schools through a tax increase and to narrow a racial achievement gap that is one of the worst in Florida were explained at a community forum Saturday.

The forum — Making our Public Schools Everyone’s Priority — was held in the Gainesville High School auditorium. School district Superintendent Karen Clarke attended GHS and said some things have not changed.

“I can see the balcony. I think those are the original chairs from when this school was built in 1955. Those chairs would be 63 years old,” Clarke said. “That’s just one small piece of what is going on in our schools.”

The school facility referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot will ask voters to approve a half-cent sales tax to be in place for 12 years. It would bring in about $22 million…
