Retiring Khama blasts fellow African leaders who refuse to leave office

President Ian Khama used Tuesday’s occasion to bid heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Botswana to criticise some African leaders who refuse to relinquish power when their terms of office have come to an end.Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Khama said he welcomed the swearing in Emmerson Mnangagwa and Cyril Ramaphosa as heads of state for Zimbabwe and South Africa, respectively.

He said the Southern African Development Community region generally remains peaceful and stable.

“The recent political developments in Zimbabwe and South Africa, which have impacted on the political landscape in the region, are indeed welcome,” he said.
