Poll: African Americans approve of Gov. Northam by 58-30 margin, don’t want him to resign

While Democratic and Republican elected officials have almost universally called for Gov. Ralph Northam to resign after a racist yearbook photo was released, a new poll indicates that strong majorities of Democrats and African Americans in Virginia approve of Northam and do not want him to resign.

Overall, Virginians are split 47-47 on whether the governor should resign, according to the poll by The Washington Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University.

Statewide, 56 percent of Republicans say he should step down while 57 percent of Democrats say he should stay in office. Democrats approve of Northam’s job performance by a margin of 66 to 23 percent while Republicans disapprove 72-17.
