Clinton police are investigating vandalism involving hate speech on a bus at a primarily African-American church in town.

Police were called to Bethel AME Church at 238 Fourth Avenue South the morning of April 27 on a report of vandalism, said Clinton police Capt. Steven Kopp.

The vandal used a marker and wrote various sayings, including, “N—— Die Soon 1488” and an image of a gun scope with “14” and “88.”

Those numbers refer to a white supremacist declaration and the numerical code for “Heil Hitler,” according to CAIR-Iowa, Council on American-Islamic Relations.
