Novato project aims to save African ostriches

At a recreational vehicle storage park in Novato, a group of volunteers committed to helping preserve the North African ostrich has been laboring over recent months to convert four shipping containers into a hatchery lab, incubator, power plant and office control room.

The work is nearing completion and next month the containers will begin their two-month journey to Niger.

“The Sahara Conservation Fund is going to be operating in the middle of nowhere, and this system is going to provide them a base with which to work from,” said Henry Cundill, a volunteer who is handling budgeting, finance and communications for the project.
