Most African Americans Have Hypertension by Age 55


More than 75 percent of African American men and women will develop high blood pressure (hypertension) by age 55, compared to 55 percent of white men and 40 percent of white women of the same age, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

For the study, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham identified 3,890 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study who were between 18 and 30 and did not have high blood pressure or take blood-pressure control medication. By age 55, 75.5 percent of African-American men, 75.7 percent of African-American women, 54.5 percent of white men, and 40.0 percent of white women had developed high blood pressure.
