Mobile’s ties to award-winning movie ‘Green Book’

Mobile has ties to the award winning new movie “Green Book.” It’s the story of an Italian American bouncer and an African American pianist who take a dangerous road trip confronting racism throughout the deep south during the Jim Crow era.

“It takes courage to change people’s hearts,” says character Don Shirley in the movie.

Two men use the green book to make it through the trip.

“Green book was a book that black entertainers and travelers would use in the 60’s,” says Mobile’s Crescent Theatre owner Max Morey.

It would list the safe places for African Americans to stay.

“It was important because they had nowhere to go but for them to sleep in her car,” says Brenda Owen-Norwood.
