Massie Heritage Center celebrates Savannah African-American hist

Massie Heritage Center is one of many places honoring Lift Every Voice, Savannah’s African-American Historic Sites free day on Sunday. 

This is a cooperative program with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of History and Culture. Chief Ulysses Bryant discussed his experience growing up in Savannah during segregation. He also talked about his role in integrating Savannah High School back in 1963.

“Oh, there were times I was very frightened of what could happen,” Chief Bryant said. “I tried to be aware of my surroundings at all times. And then over the course of 9 months of school, there were times I’d even receive threatening phone calls at home. In very derogatory terms, don’t come to school the next day.”
