Maryland Zoo offers contest to public to help name 1,000th African penguin chick

The Maryland Zoo is asking for the public’s help naming their 1,000th African penguin chick!

The female chick hatched last month and was the first time a zoo or aquarium in North American has hatched as many of the species, zoo officials said.

The four following names were selected by zoo staff. To cast your vote, click here.

Millie – Based on the number 1,000, Millie short for Millennium

Kay – Also based on the number 1,000, Kay as in K, the abbreviation, or kiloyears

Mango – Following the ‘tree theme’ that the other chicks were named for this year

Amanzi – The Zulu word for water
