Letter: Tourism’s global value chain

Dear Sir:

For the past 56 years we in Trinidad and Tobago have been talking about making tourism, especially in Tobago, one of the mainstays of our economy. One that provides both jobs and particularly the foreign exchange that is the lifeblood of our small open economy.

We have provided a ministry of tourism and a tourism development company, the latter now split into two companies; one to look after Trinidad and the other Tobago. We have attended global conferences so as to introduce our product to the world. We have continuously supplied an airline to ferry the tourists to our islands.

Also we sit in an area where others operate highly successful tourism economies -Barbados, St Lucia, The Bahamas, Jamaica.
