When Beverly L. Bourne was appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court almost three years ago, she took inventory not only of where she was in her professional life but what it required to get there.

A top judge in the second largest city in the United States, Bourne recalled the crisis of confidence and anxiety she developed after failing to pass the California State Bar exam five times. And she also remembered the man who saved her career from dying before it began — former Yeadon resident Bruce L. Brodie.
