Infant mortality rates in Kansas on the rise, especially for African-American population


TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Black infants in Kansas are nearly three times more likely to die before their first birthday than white or Hispanic babies.

The Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment hosted a panel discussion Friday afternoon with community leaders at the Brown v. Board Historic Site. They showed the movie “Unnatural Causes.” It’s about how systemic racism effects birth and babies ability to reach their birthday.

They discussed the infant mortality rate, or IMR. It’s the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. In Kansas, the IMR for the Hispanic population is 5.1 and the IMR for the white non-Hispanic population 5.2.
