Grant will go toward roof replacement of historic black church in Great Barrington | The Berkshire Eagle

GREAT BARRINGTON — Twice in the last two years, volunteers have had to patch the leaky roof of the former Clinton AME Zion Church.

The leaks already have caused structural damage to the church, and donated tarps have covered the roof in winter months to prevent further decay.

But those days are over.

Thanks to a $75,000 emergency grant, the church soon will have a new roof.

The grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission heralds steady progress in efforts to repair and renovate the historic church building, long the heart of African-American spiritual, cultural and political life in town, and transform it into a cultural center.
