From the Bluegrass to the White House: Alice Allison Dunnigan’s legacy


RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) — Last Friday, the Newseum in Washington D.C. unveiled a statue of journalist and civil rights activist, Alice Allison Dunnigan.

From Russellville, Kentucky, Duunnigan’s great niece talked about her legacy.

“She never let the fact go that she was from Kentucky,” said Penny Allison Lockhart, great niece of Alice Dunnigan.

After attending college, and teaching at an all black school in the Bluegrass, Dunnigan felt called to evoke change.

“She knew she had to leave. There was no way that the change was going to start right here in Russellville, Kentucky. To make change it’s almost like in that time you had to get to Washington D.C.,” said…
