Experiencing a ‘Taste of Africa’ | Life

MARYVILLE, Mo. — “There is a danger to only hearing a single story,” advised communication professor Dr. Bayo Joachim to an attentive crowd Saturday night. Joachim, like many others in the ballroom, wore the traditional clothing of his native African community.

“We want to provide a taste of the other story, that there is more to Africa than what you see or hear in the news. So we are going to be tasting the richness of Africa, and I hope that as you taste of it, that you will want more.”

Joachim, a native of Nigeria, delivered the opening speech at “Taste of Africa,” an event hosted by Northwest Missouri State University’s African Student Organization, or ASO.
