Ex-Panthers owner Jerry Richardson pledges $5M to African American Museum in Charleston | Business


The International African American Museum has received its largest single donation to-date.

Former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and wife Rosalind have pledged $5 million toward the project. 

Former Mayor Joe Riley and other officials announced the gift Thursday  at the future museum site near the city’s Maritime Center at the former Gadsden’s Wharf, where tens of thousands of enslaved Africans first set foot in Charleston. The Richardsons did not attend.

Of the $5 million, $1 million will be used for construction and another $1 million for staffing and startup.
