Evelyn Foxx: Children of color should believe they can be top earners – Opinion –

I looked at the faces in a story on top city and county earners, published last month in The Sun, and again felt the deep disappointment experienced by people who look like me and live in Alachua County.

We teach our children that you can achieve in any profession, if only your heart and mind are determined. How are the African-American or children of color really supposed to believe this? Not one of the top earners in their local government looks like them.

African-Americans achieve great things. A recent example: Jesmyn Ward won the 2017 National Book Award for “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” Look no further than our Matheson History Museum and A. Quinn Jones Museum to see examples of great local African-Americans.
