Ethnic Heritage Museum honors Winnebago County’s first African-American judge


ROCKFORD – On Sunday afternoon, the Ethnic Heritage Museum presented a surprise exhibit honoring Judge Patrick Yarbrough, the first African-American judge to serve in Winnebago County.

The Rockford native has served with various organizations throughout the community over the years. 

For the exhibit at the museum, located at 1129 S Main Street, the museum selected several pieces from his life to put on display.

Yarbrough says it’s an honor to be recognized by a museum exhibit.

“I’m very surprised, honored and grateful — humbled that someone would be interested in the relics that I’ve had in my chambers, the relics that symbolize the different things that have taken place in my life and helped me make decisions throughout the day,” he said.
